Transgender Coloradans face unique challenges. Widespread discrimination, unemployment, homelessness, and violence are just some of the issues transgender people face on a daily basis.
One Colorado is devoted to ending discrimination and violence against transgender Coloradans through education and advocacy on the state and local level.
Progress for transgender Coloradans has been slowly advancing in recent years. One of the most significant recent victories was the inclusion of transgender people in Colorado’s anti-discrimination laws to protect them from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations in 2008. Another significant victory for transgender Coloradans was a bulletin from the Division of Insurance stating that health insurance companies can no longer exclude transgender Coloradans from coverage.
In 2015, One Colorado led the coalition working to pass a law updating the process for transgender Coloradans to update the gender on their birth certificate. The Birth Certificate Modernization Act would have eliminated the surgery requirement and the court order currently required in Colorado before someone can change the gender on their birth certificate. Unfortunately, this bill died in the Colorado Senate after passing with a bipartisan majority in the State House.
By continuing to educate friends, neighbors and policy makers, we can ensure that all Coloradans, including transgender people, can live their lives as they choose; free from the fear of abuse or discrimination. Together, we will build a fair and just state for all Coloradans.
