And we’re off! Civil unions just passed the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill will now move on to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
All of us at OC are in awe of everything our supporters have done to help us get to today’s victory. Thousands and thousands of folks have already gotten involved to help make sure that 2013 is our year. We can’t thank you enough for helping us start this legislative session off with a big win.
But after today’s hearing, we’re also in shock. After hours of testimony from couples asking for the tools to protect their families, Catholic Charities of Colorado issued a threat to members of the committee: Pass civil unions, and we’ll stop providing services to vulnerable children searching for their forever homes.
We’re shocked at the threats and lies that our opponents are using to try to stop civil unions. And I believe we need to act fast to make sure that our lawmakers aren’t swayed.
We’ve always known this day would come. We’ve always known that opponents of civil unions are willing to go to any lengths to stop the bill from passing. I just didn’t think that they’d make vulnerable children collateral damage in this debate.
But rather than see all families have equal protection under the law, Catholic Charities would discontinue their work finding children loving homes.
It’s pretty simple: adoption is about creating loving, stable homes for kids and making sure children have the nurturing environment that allows them to thrive and succeed. We shouldn’t play political games with kids who deserve forever homes.
Catholic Charities provides critical services to our communities. But we can’t let political threats and scare tactics stop us from providing all Colorado families with the protections they need to take care of the ones they love.
Today was a big win that’s propelling us forward with a lot of momentum at our backs. We’re committed to making sure that we keep it going.
