2017 Transgender Day of Remembrance Across the State

There are several Transgender Day of Remembrance events happening across the state this week. We’ve included the details below (plus links!) if you’re interested in attending.

‍Denver

‍Trans Day of Remembrance on the Auraria Campus featuring Starr Graham (hosted by the LGBTQ Student Resource Center)

‍When: Thursday, November 16 from 11am-2pm

‍Where: Tivoli Multicultural Lounge – 900 Auraria Pkwy. Denver, CO 80204

‍What: At the event, we take time to recognize, memorialize, and mourn the lives of transgender people taken this past year. Refreshments provided.

‍

‍Trans Day of Remembrance: Memorial Altar (hosted by the LGBTQ Student Resource Center)

When: Thursday, November 16

‍Where: LGBTQ Student Resource Center – Tivoli Student Union #213 Denver, CO 80204What: There will be a memorial altar during and after the Auraria event, which will have the faces and names of the transgender individuals whose lives were taken from them this year. People may bring offerings to place on the table or under it! These offerings are in respect and love to their memory and our community.

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance (hosted by the Gender Identity Center)

When: Monday, November 20th from 6:30 to 9:00pm

‍Where: East High School – 1600 City Park Esplanade Denver, CO 80206

‍What: Show your support for Colorado’s transgender community while memorializing those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. This is a free community event and is open to the general public. Feel free to invite your friends & family!

Wednesday, November 15th – Sharing Transgender Stories/Compartiendo historias transgénero Panel

7:00 to 9:00pmCome to OBC on Main to listen to an amazing panel of transgender community members. They will share stories that many of you have never heard before and at the end of the presentations there will be opportunities to ask questions. Be prepared to be enlightened and to leave the evening with information that will make you a better ally.

‍Friday, November 17th – Stand-Up Comedy: A Tribute to Jordan Wieleba

(The Boedecker Theater, 2590 Walnut St, Boulder, Colorado 80302) – 8:30pm

Join Out Boulder County for a night of standup comedy in honor of Jordan Wieleba, a local comic, trans woman, and powerful soul who was taken from us way too soon just over a year ago. The lineup for the night is packed with a stellar lineup of comics who are ready to split your sides and fill the room with laughter to honor Jordan and her massive impact in Colorado and across the country. We will hear sets from Janae Burris, Jaye McBride, Christie Buchele, and Rachel Weeks, in addition to selections from Jordan’s live album, Estrogentrification (available here: https://soundcloud.com/user-360657130/jordan-wieleba-estrogentrification). ‍Saturday, November 18th – Name Change Clinic

‍(First United Methodist Church of Boulder, 1421 Spruce St, Boulder, Colorado 80302) – 3:00 to 6:00pm

Changing your name can seem like a daunting process but it is easier than you think. We will have experts on hand to walk you through the process and answer questions- plus you get to hang out with a bunch of other super cool trans folk. If you are interested in starting the process right away our friends at Denver Fingerprinting will be on hand to scan your fingerprints to get the process started in a matter of days rather than the 12-14 weeks it normally takes for a fee of $99. Regardless of when you want to change your name this workshop will set you up with everything you need to know.

‍Sunday, November 19th – Transgiving Community Dinner

(630 Main St, Longmont, CO 80501) – 6:00 to 10:00pm

Our annual Transgiving Dinner is a celebration of our trans community. Join together with other trans identified folk and enjoy a free traditional holiday meal in a safe and welcoming environment. Meet old and new friends and enjoy some time away from life’s struggles and in the company of those who walk in your shoes. This event is 18+. Folks ages 16 or 17 may be allowed with guardian permission. Please RSVP to the event via this link so we may be able to accommodate all attending. (Facebook event page)

‍Monday, November 20th – Transgender Day of Remembrance/Dia de Recuerdo Transgénero Vigil

(Boulder County Courthouse on Pearl between 13th and 14th, 80302) – 6:00pm

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. This year we will meet at the Courthouse on Pearl Street in Boulder to begin the ceremony and then walk together to the labyrinth at First United Methodist Church for the reading of the names.

‍Fort Collins

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil (hosted by CSU Pride Resource Center, Eclectic of Northern Colorado, and Splash – Northern Colorado)

‍When: Thursday, November 16th at 5:30pm

‍Where: CSU Pride Resource Center – Lory Student Center 232 Fort Collins, Colorado 80521

‍What: Join us on Thursday, November 16th for Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time of honoring, recognition, and remembrance. There will be refreshments, speakers, a candlelight vigil, and community.

‍Greeley

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance & Resilience (hosted by the UNC Gender & Sexuality Resource Center)

‍When: Thursday, November 16th from 5:30 to 7:00pmWhere: Spruce B – UNC University Center 2101 10th Ave, Greeley, CO 80631

‍What: This year on Thursday, November 16th the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) & the Assault Survivors Advocacy Program (ASAP) will be collaborating to host this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience. Traditionally, TDOR has been dedicated to the sober reflection of trans lives lost in the last year to transphobic violence. This year, we are adding the second R for “resilience” in an effort to give our transgender siblings something positive to celebrate. Although it is vital to remember those we have lost, it is just as important to support each other and give each other strength to keep fighting.

‍Loveland

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil

‍When: Monday, November 20th at 7:00pm

‍Where: Namaqua UU Congregation – 745 E 5th St, Loveland, CO 80537

‍What: Loveland will hold a candlelight vigil to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people. This vigil is also intended to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. Harmony: a Colorado chorale will be singing!

‍Grand Junction

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil

‍When: Sunday, November 19th from 4:00 to 6:30pm

‍Where: First Congregational Church United Church of Christ

1425 N 5th St, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501

‍What: Join Transcend, One Colorado, and the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Grand Junction for a vigil to memorialize those who were killed this year due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. There will be a reading of names and candlelight vigil and the labyrinth on the south side of the church will be available to anyone needing a peaceful moment of reflection. A small coffee and sweets reception will follow with an open discussion. This event is free and open to the public.

‍Durango

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance

‍When: Sunday, November 19th at 5:00pm

‍Where: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive, Durango, CO 81301

‍What: Join FourSTAR, Four Corners Alliance for Diversity, Four Corners Rainbow Youth Center, and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango to honor lives lost to anti-transgender hate and violence.

‍Salida

‍Trans Day of Remembrance (Hosted by Ark Valley Pride)

‍When: Monday, November 20th from 5:30 to 6:30pm

‍Where: Salida SteamPlant Event Center – 220 W Sackett Ave, Salida, Colorado 81201

‍What: Join Ark Valley Pride in observing the Transgender Day of Remembrance in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. We will be meeting at the SteamPlant Event Center at the small park next to the river by the boatramp. There will be a short vigil led by Marquita Oliver. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Bring a jacket (it may be cold by the river) and send us a list of the names you would like to honor and we will read them at the event. Bring candles, any snacks you’d like to share, etc. We will have hot chocolate available. A free film is playing at the SteamPlant (Harold and Maude) at 7 p.m. if you would like to join us.

‍Pueblo

‍Transgender Day of Remembrance Memorial and Tribute (hosted by Trans-Generations of Pueblo and Christ Congregational Church)

‍When: Monday, November 20th at 6:00pm

‍Where: Christ Congregational Church – 1003 Liberty Lane, Pueblo, CO 81001

‍What: Join Trans-Generations of Pueblo, and Christ Congregational Church, in honoring the memories of those whose lives were lost due to anti-transgender violence & rhetoric at their 2017 Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) Candlelight Memorial and Tribute. The candlelight memorial and tribute begins at 6pm. Join them after the ceremony for refreshments in the church’s basement.One Colorado is putting on a webinar about working with, and supporting, transgender students on November 15, 2017 at 3:30 pm. Sign up to learn more about the experiences of transgender students in Colorado, and things you can do to make schools safe and welcoming.

What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?

Transgender Day of Remembrance is held each year in November and memorializes those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves many purposes: It raises awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, it publicly mourns and honors the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten, and it gives allies to the transgender community a chance to step forward and stand in vigil to memorializing those who’ve passed.
