One Colorado Launches “TransForming the Narrative” and Transgender Changemaker Cohort to Build Support for Trans Rights Across the State

Dignity, fairness, and Freedom are Colorado values. Every person—regardless of their race, ability, gender, or where they were born—deserves the chance to thrive. Our communities are strongest when we celebrate our diversity and stand together in the fight for justice.

But there are those who see our unity as a threat. Extremists backed by billionaires are working overtime to strip dignity and rights away—not just from transgender people, but from immigrants, Black and brown communities, working class people, people with disabilities, and anyone who doesn’t fit into their narrow vision of who belongs.

They’re driven by a desire to maintain control and protect systems of inequality. These groups rely on division to distract us from the real issues: economic injustice, systemic racism, and inequities in health care, education, and housing.

They exploit fear and unfamiliarity, painting transgender people as 'other' to justify their attacks. But we’ve seen this before—throughout history, oppressors have used the same tactics against immigrants, Black and brown people, and people with disabilities. They count on silence and division to push their agenda forward.

TransForming the Narrative

In response to the rising tide of anti-trans rhetoric and harmful policies, One Colorado is launching “TransForming the Narrative,” a statewide initiative designed to shift the conversation around transgender rights. By amplifying the voices of transgender Coloradans and using storytelling as a tool for education, this program seeks to foster long-term empathy and understanding.

“Stories have the power to transform hearts and minds,” said Jax Gonzalez, Political Director at One Colorado. “With ‘TransForming the Narrative,’ we’re centering the voices of transgender Coloradans to build bridges of understanding and create a future where everyone can live authentically and free from discrimination. This is about solidarity, education, and action to ensure Colorado stands firmly for trans equality.”

The initiative will bring together community members, allies, and advocates from across the state, empowering them to confront misconceptions and advocate for policies that uphold trans autonomy and rights. By engaging with the broader community, One Colorado hopes to build a collective front in the fight for trans equality—one that is rooted in shared knowledge, respect, and solidarity.

Transgender Changemaker Cohort

In addition to TransForming the Narrative, One Colorado is also launching a new program to empower transgender leaders from across the state. The Transgender Changemaker Cohort will equip trans activists with the tools and support they need to build collective power in their communities. This cohort offers an opportunity to expand your network, gain skills in advocacy and storytelling, and join forces with others who are working to ensure that all transgender Coloradans have the opportunity to thrive.

“The far right is trying to divide us with false narratives and harmful legislation,” said Alex Floyd, Health Equity Director at One Colorado. “We are committed to bringing people together to build a better, more inclusive future for everyone in our state. The Transgender Changemaker Cohort is one way we can ensure that trans leaders have the support and resources they need to effect meaningful change.”

If you’re interested in joining the cohort, or if you want to learn more about this exciting new program, please fill out the application here.

A Call to Action: Stand with Us for Equality

These initiatives are more than just opportunities to learn—they’re calls to action. Whether you are  advocating for change at Lobby Day, or sharing stories to shift public narratives, One Colorado is inviting everyone—LGBTQIA+ individuals, allies, and community members—to come together and make a difference.

By getting involved in the fight for equality, you can help ensure that Colorado remains a state that champions freedom, justice, and the rights of all its citizens. From healthcare access and gender-affirming care to non-discrimination protections, there is much work to be done, but we can make real change when we stand united.
