9.20 One Colorado's Statement on the Death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans, released the following statement in response to the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

‍“One Colorado mourns the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a fearless advocate for equal rights before her time on the bench and during her nearly 27 years as an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Justice Ginsburg led some of the most historical legal battles to ensure the equal treatment of every American. She was a champion for many marginalized communities in this country, especially the LGBTQ community. When Colorado’s Amendment 2, an initiative to prevent LGBTQ Coloradans from receiving legal recognition and protections, came before the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg joined the majority opinion in Romer v. Evans, granting equal protection under the law to our community. She was unwavering in her support in the Windsor v. Obergefell decision, which granted national relationship recognition of same-sex couples. Just this summer, Justice Ginsburg further solidified her commitment to equality in Bostock v. Clayton County, which found that discrimination against LGBTQ workers is unconstitutional under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Justice Ginsburg’s judicial opinions always spoke with a clear voice, railing against inequality and discrimination. That voice will be deeply missed. One Colorado honors Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy of fighting for equality, justice, and fairness in the law. Just last week, One Colorado partnered with Our Courts Colorado to highlight the importance of the judicial retention system, understanding that so many rights — the rights of women, voting rights, and the rights of the LGBTQ community — were won at the courthouse. As we look ahead, we must continue to build on a healthy, thriving democracy. In the coming days, Coloradans will receive their ballots. We urge all Coloradans, especially LGBTQ Coloradans, to make their voices heard and cast their vote early. We honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy by demanding that our legislators value equality as fervently as she did, and hold them accountable with the power of our vote. This fight is not ours alone. One Colorado stands with our intersecting communities who are advancing racial justice, reproductive rights, and immigrant rights. We will stand together to preserve and protect our Constitution, knowing that our quest for equality is a patriotic fight that will be won at the ballot box, the State House, and the Courthouse.”
