One Colorado Highlights LGBTQ Health Mental Health Disparities During Mental Health Awareness Month

One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans, released the following statements on the first day of 2020 Mental Health Awareness Month.

“This year, Mental Health Awareness Month couldn't have come at a more relevant time. We are all struggling to stay positive, healthy, and mentally well. We know from data collected in our Closing the Gap health report that LGBTQ Coloradans are about three times as likely to have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression than non-LGBTQ Coloradans. Especially in this time of crisis, we need to raise awareness and expand supports for our community. ”- Daniel Ramos, Executive Director, One Colorado

“COVID-19 has presented yet another health challenge to the LGBTQ community, who already face increased social isolation and lack of connection. At One Colorado, we will use Mental Health Awareness Month to draw attention to these issues and provide resources to those in need of support. We cannot let these mental health disparities increase during the pandemic.” - Marvyn Allen, Health Equity & Training Director, One Colorado

"Mental health awareness month is an important reminder that we all need access to mental health support. It’s ok to ask for help. That’s why I championed a 2018 ballot initiative, Caring for Denver, to create the largest mental health foundation in the state. Caring for Denver provides mental health and substance misuse treatment and services for children and adults throughout Denver.Especially now, with COVID-19 threatening not only our physical health but our mental health, access to services is incredibly important. I will continue to pursue solutions to ensure access, reduce the stigma, and improve our well-being through mental health services."- Representative Leslie Herod (D-Denver)

On May 12th, 5:30-6:30 PM, One Colorado will host a LGBTQ Mental Health Awareness Month Virtual Town Hall with panelists:

Dr. Sarah Burgamy, PhoenixRISECara Cheevers, Colorado Division of InsuranceJustin Upwell, Denver ElementEmily Kipling, Transgender Center of the Rockies

This virtual event is free and open to the public. Interested folks can register here.Throughout the month of May, One Colorado will be highlighting the mental health needs of LGBTQ folks and providing resources to address these needs. The month will focus on all ages—from LGBTQ youth and parents, to young adults, to older adults— and center the conversation around mental health data that makes each group unique.
